Barry One buries the mediocrity

Rapper Barry One showed that Malawi’s hip hop and urban music is something devoid of mediocrity when he led urban musicians to launch his Maso Atseguka album at Robin’s Park in Blantyre on Saturday.

The musician put up a grand performance much to the pleasure of the patrons.

Although Blantyre City was awash with several major events, including the Carlsberg Cup final between Mighty Be Forward Wanderers and Silver Strikers, the launch attracted an impressive and mainly youthful audience.

Even the popular Manchester derby between Manchester United and Manchester City—the kind of games that pull several patrons to social joints—failed to put off some music fans who eventually turned up for the all-stars music party.

Gwamba, Piksy, Fredokiss, Post Negative of the Undibelekere Mwana fame, Young K and Martse are some of those that had impressive performances on the afternoon.

Powered by K-Dub Entertainment, the launch took a rather different approach as there was no CD auctioning during the performance, which is usually the case during album launches.

“We did not carry out an auction because we just wanted it to be a celebration. But CDs will be available on the market this week and people should be able to buy from different selling spots to be communicated soon,” said Barry One.

He described the event as a success, saying he had not anticipated such a turn up as a host of events were taking place in the city.

The musician said he would take the launch to other major cities of the country.

“Next are the other cities, but before that, I will release more videos and possibly organise a DVD launch. I am just keeping my fingers crossed as well as looking up to God to make everything possible,” said the musician, real name Barry Mkorongo.

Martse said it was thrilling to be part of the event.
