“We would like to inform all Basmal affiliates that the executive committee of Cezobal has been dissolved with immediate effect on disciplinary grounds. The decision was reached at an extraordinary meeting held on January 23,” reads part of the statement signed by Basmal general secretary Edgar Ng’ong’ola.

Meanwhile, Basmal has said all matters relating to Cezobal should be channelled to the office of the committee’s general secretary which is still operational.

According to Ng’ong’ola, among other issues, Cezobal hosted international games against Tanzanian clubs without the knowledge and approval of  Basmal and Malawi National  Council of Sports (MNCS).

“They were also involved in trying to sabotage the 2015 National Basketball Tournament which was played in November last year in Lilongwe,” he said.

Ng’ong’ola claimed that, twice, the Cezobal executive committee was summoned for a disciplinary hearing, but they did not turn up.

However, Ng’ong’ola said the Cezobal executive committee members are free to appeal  to MNCS against the dissolution.

Reacting to the development, Cezobal general secretary Peter Gomani described Basmal’s move as unfair.

“This is more or less a personal issue between our chairperson and the GS of Basmal and it is disappointing that is has affected the entire committee.

“Dissolving the executive committee is not the solution to the problems that are there. We are going to appeal. We also had a meeting with our teams and they have encouraged us to appeal in addition to petitioning Sports Council on Basmal’s decision,” he said.
