Basmal elects new committee

The Basketball Association of Malawi (Basmal) on Saturday held an elective general assembly at Malawi National Council of Sports premises in Blantyre where a new committee was ushered in.

The new president is Southern Region Basketball League (Sozobal) chairperson Hamlet Kamtengeni who went unopposed and also in absentia.

His deputy is Central Regiona Basketball League (Cezobal) chairperson Khama Mphepo who also went unopposed.

The position of general secretary went to Edgar Ng’ong’ola from Cezobal who beat Dalisto Thepetheya of Sozobal by 14 votes against two.

Vice-general secretary is Banthari Munthali of Sozobal who beat Young Jere of Northern Region Basketball League (Nozobal) 13-3.

The new treasurer is Lisungu Banda from Cezobal who beat Kananji of Sozobal by 11 votes to five. She is the only female member in the executive committee.

The two executive member seats went to George Phiri of Cezobal and Obed Nyirongo from Sozobal.

The elections, which were presided over by Sports Council executive secretary Gorge Jana and sports development officer Ruth Mzengo, were declared free and fair.

Ng’ong’ola said the new executive will have its initial meeting soon to map the way forward.

“There seems to be good relations amongst us and our core objective is the same— to improve the game. Our new president Mr. Kamtengeni lost his mother on the day of the elections, so we will have to meet at another convenient time,” said Ng’ong’ola.

In an interview on Monday, Kamtengeni said the new committee will work on energising the sport in all district.n
