The Basketball Association of Malawi (Basmal) has announced that zonal elections are expected to be conducted in its three affiliated zones on Saturday.

Basmal general secretary Edger Ng’ong’ola confirmed in an interview that elections are on this weekend.

He said interested candidates were given notice up to September 3 (Thursday) to declare their interest to contest various positions.

“Any team affiliated to Basmal in the three respective zones has the right to vote within the zone it is affiliated to. Teams are requested to send two representatives to participate in the election process.

“All those that are willing to contest were requested to submit their names to their respective committees which shall be submitted to Basmal,” said Ng’ong’ola.

Positions that are up for grabs are chairperson, vice-chairperson, general secretary, vice-general secretary, treasurer and committee members for different age groups, according to Ng’ong’ola.

The venues for the elections across the country include Malawi National Sports Council (MNSC) offices in Mzuzu, Civo Basketball Court and Blantyre Youth Centre (BYC).

Basmal has appealed to more women to be involved in the elections.

“We need gender balance if the sport is to attract more women to take part in basketball. Our appeal is for women to compete for positions,” said Ng’ong’ola.

Basmal held an elective national assembly last month in Blantyre where a new executive led by Hamlet Kamtengeni was elected into the office.

Most of the members, who led zonal committees, were elected in the new committee, creating vacuum in regional leagues.
