Blantyre netball fans should brace themselves for an overdose of scintillating netball action this weekend as battle in the penultimate round of the GOtv Netball Champions League goes to the wire at Blantyre Youth Centre (BYC).

Of course, there had been some lip-smacking moments in the last two rounds of the competition, in which Blue Eagles Sisters managed to beat defending champions Complex Tigresses (40-37) for the first time and Lameck Queens earned 150-0 bonus victory over Kukoma Diamonds.

More thrilling surprises are expected this weekend, according to Multi-choice Malawi marketing manager Chimwemwe Nyirenda.

It is after this weekend’s matches that four of the eight contesting teams will make it into the semi-finals while the rest will have to pack their bags and return home with an agonising pain of missing the opportunity of winning the K2.5 million first prize.

The teams were divided into GOtv Plus and GOtv Value groups, each of which has four teams.

The top two teams from each group after the games on Saturday and Sunday will proceed to the final round in Lilongwe next week.

“This is the critical stage of the competition,” said Nyirenda. “It is a do-or-die stage where all the participating teams should fight for glory at all cost. It will be a very exciting weekend.”

Eagles top the GOtv Plus group with six points, two ahead of second-placed Tigresses and four above third-placed Mafco Sisters. Mimosa Queens anchor the table with no point.

In GOtv Value group, Thunder Queens lead with four points, the same as second-placed Diamonds, who are inferior on aggregate.

Lameck Queens and CivoNets have two points apiece, but they are on third and fourth positions respectively. n
