Nyasa Big Bullets have fulfilled requirements to participate in the 2022/23 Confederation of African Football (CAF) Champions League.

This follows Football Association of Malawi (FAM) First Instant Body’s decision to approve their participation after a review meeting in Blantyre on Saturday.

Bullets taking on AmaZulu during the previous edition

In an interview on Sunday, FAM club licensing and compliance manager Casper Jangale said: “I can confirm that Bullets indeed wrote us expressing interest to take part in the tournament.

“As per procedure, they were supposed to meet certain club licensing requirements and upon review, the body felt Bullets made the grade.

“The results will be sent to CAF for their perusal before the June 30 deadline.”

He said the association is pleased to have a representative in the tournament.

Bullets are assured of Champions League participation

Said Jangale: “Bullets’ participation has a lot of gains in terms of football growth and development.”

The committee’s chairperson Allan Muhome, members Trouble Kalua, Cuthbert Mnyenyembe and Maxwell Mtonga attended the meeting.

Bullets chief executive officer Suzgo Nyirenda said they are delighted to have passed the test.

He said: “We are excited and we believe we can do better than in the past two editions.

“Being the national champions, we need to aim higher by competing against the cream of the tournament, thereby exposing local talent.

“In a special way, I would like to thank our board of directors for once again approving our participation.”

In last year’s edition, the People’s Team were booted out by Amazulu FC of South Africa. Bullets won the first leg 1-0 away, but lost the reverse fixture 3-1.

Meanwhile, Silver Strikers, who are eligible to take part in CAF Confederation Cup by virtue of being FDH Bank Cup champions, have said they are yet to decide on participation.

Silver Strikers company secretary Peter Masiye yesterday said he needed to consult on the issue.

In a statement issued on Saturday, CAF said preparations for the 2022/23 CAF inter-clubs competitions have officially begun.

The statement reads in part: “The CAF Inter-club Competitions Organising Committee resolved on a number of key matters pertaining to the upcoming season, which include the registration of clubs, competition dates, player registrations and engagement conditions for member associations.”
