BB rebuff Liberian team on Gabadinho

Big Bullets have turned their back on Liberian top club Invincible Eleven’s interest to sign red-hot forward Gabadinho Mhango.

The Monrovia-based club made advances on Gabadinho after being swayed with his performance during Tuesday’s friendly between the Flames and Liberia’s Lone Star.

Invincible Eleven (IE) is one of the biggest and most popular clubs in Liberia. George Oppong Weah, the only African to have won the Fifa World Player of the Year, played for them in the 1980s.

IE chairperson Willard Russell was quoted by MBC on Thursday as saying they would like to offer Gabadinho an outright contract.

“He is a skilful player and we would want to sign him. We want to get in touch with his club [Big Bullets] and then take it up from there,” Russell was quoted as saying.

But Bullets general secretary Higger Mkandawire said their position on Gabadinho has not changed.

“Our position remains that until he completes his secondary school education, we are not prepared to release ‘Gaba’ to join a foreign team. Our priority and, of course, that of his parents is his education,” said Mkandawire.

He said football is a short-term career and the lad needs something to fall back on after his playing days.

“Unless if his parents change their mind, Gabadinho will not be allowed to join a foreign club,” Mkandawire insisted.

Gabadinho’s father, Society Mhango, told the media recently that he would not allow his son to join a foreign club until he completes secondary school.

Gabadinho is expected to sit for Junior Certificate of Education examinations next year having failed to do so this year for unexplained reasons.

Gabadinho could not be reached for comment.
