BBA’s Felicia goes into fashion design

She shot to fame when she represented Malawi at Africa’s leading reality show, Big Brother Africa, in 2011.

She might not have made it to the last six, just like compatriot Tendai ‘Lomwe’ Namate, but one thing is for sure—she shot to stardom.

However, the fame did not translate into fortune for her compared to some of the country’s representatives at the continental reality show.

Having tried her luck in the professional industry as a marketer for the defunct National Lottery, her joy was shot-lived as a few months later the gaming company closed shop.

That is the brief story of Felicia Susan Ngoma after her stint at the Big Brother Amplified.

Felicia has not lost hope because now she has entered the fashion industry.

She is a designer boosting a label, Nyasa Brands.

“After my Big Brother spell, I had so much planned but when one door closes, another one opens. Therefore, I opened a new chapter for my future and I am studying tailoring and design at Macoha. It’s a six-month course which I am completing in May. The good thing is that fashion is my passion, and many people take me as a fashion icon due to my kind of dressing,” said Felicia.

“Many people had been asking where I get my clothes because of simplicity and elegancy. Many wanted to dress like I dress. That also inspired me to venture into the fashion industry. I want to give people what represents me, what they like,” she added.

Soon after Big Brother, she announced plans of joining the entertainment industry. However, that did not materialise and Felicia had to look for plan B.

“It is a God-given talent which does not need much effort. I am enjoying what I am doing and, yes, I am here for good,” she said.

Felicia describes her designs as trendy and unique.

“I use mostly Malawi fabrics which are combined with organic or raw materials such as fruit seeds like peaches. The foundation of Nyasa Brands is based on the Malawian culture; hence, the common use of locally available stuff in our designs.

“Currently, I am focusing on launching my brand in the near future,” she said.
