BCC, Water for People commemorate Hand Washing Day
Blantyre City Council (BCC), in partnership with Water for People, on Wednesday commemorated the Global Hand Washing Day at a function held at Chichiri Secondary School ground.
Speaking during the commemoration, BCC deputy mayor Wild Ndipo said washing hands is one of the best practices that can prevent the spread of diseases.
“If we can make hand washing a habit, we will prevent diseases and this will reduce the money we spend on drugs,” he said.
Water for People senior programmes manager Wellington Mitole said the day is celebrated to teach and remind everyone, especially school children, the importance of washing hands before eating.
The day was marked by activities such as a big walk, poem recitals, singing, quiz and hand washing competition.
Global Hand Washing Day, which is commemorated annually on October 15, is a global advocacy day dedicated to increasing awareness and understanding the importance of hand washing with soap as an easy, effective and affordable way of preventing diseases.
This year’s theme was Let Us Make Hand Washing a Habit. n
