Malawians should not take for granted the fact that the Flames are, with meagre resources, progressing in the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) group qualifiers, sports director Jameson Ndalama has said.

“My plea to Malawians is to support the team. They should not give up. It is not a mean achievement being the only southern African team that registered a win last Wednesday in the second round of group qualifiers,” Ndalama explained on Monday.

had asked him on government’s plans on the national team, including the delayed contracts for coach Young Chimodzi and deputy coach Jack Chamangwana.

“They [other countries] have better facilities and resources, yet with what we have, the team is still in contention. It is not by design that other countries do not have teams competing in Afcon. Let us be proud of the team and also the netball Queens. I call on the private sector to support these teams,” added Ndalama.

Former Flames captain John Maduka on Tuesday said he was happy for the win over Ethiopia and called for more support to the team, “this thing of just criticizing all the time won’t take us anywhere. Criticise in a good way.”

Some Flames fans, after the Wednesday’s game against Ethiopia at Kamuzu Stadium, separately called on Chimodzi and company to work on the defence especially goalkeeping.
