Speaking during the handover ceremony at Area 25A market, Beam executive committee member Hyasinta Chikaonda, said the donations were made after situation assessments at the markets.

She said: “We toured the markets to assess the situation and identify needs and one of the challenges we noticed was shortage of clearing and waste disposal equipment. We are doing this so that people who conduct business in the markets do not have excuses for lack of cleanliness.”

Chikaonda also announced plans by Beam to rehabilitate toilets in some of the country’s city markets.

Beam distributed 15 wheelbarrows, 15 shovels and 10 rakes each to Area 25A, Area 23, Chinsapo, Bwandilo and Kabwabwa markets.

Beam Trust is a charity formed to facilitate hygiene and prevent outbreak of diseases resulting from poor sanitation.
