Beatrice Kamwendo has been nominated to lead Jena Sisters and the Zigzaggers at the Malawi Arts and Cultural Festival slated for Lilongwe this month.

The former Kamwendo Brothers and Ravers songbird takes over the microphone from Ben Mankhamba, who is in Hannover, Germany, until next month.

In an interview, the award-winning Mankhamba,  founding director of the Zigzaggers and Jena Sisters, admitted that his overseas trip has ruled him out of the maiden festival, being bankrolled by the Ministry of Tourism and Culture.

“Beatrice has been with the band for years and I think there is no disruption of any sort, for  this is her chance to show the world that she has come of age,” said the Kamba Anga Mwala star, who won the Malawi Gin Music Trophy five times in a row.

He affirmed it is time women played lead roles in the male-dominated music scene where his substitute’s sister, Ethel Kamwendo-Banda, tops a pack of female artists in the gospel sector.

Kamwendo, who joined the Zigzaggers in 2008, described it as a big honour to be nominated to lead the band at the festival which is yet to be confirmed.

According to invitations sent to different groups, the three-day festival will take place at Civo Stadium and Crossroads Hotel from May.
