Big Bullets clubhouse closed for ‘renovations’

The landlord has closed Big Bullets’ clubhouse in Blantyre for reported renovations, general secretary Higger Mkandawire claimed on Tuesday.

“The clubhouse should be up and running any day this week. The landlord told us to give them some space for renovations to make the place up to the standard of a club,” said Mkandawire.

The sight of the club being lifeless since late last week sparked speculation on what might have become of the People’s Team home. Other reports suggested that there was a fallout between the team and the landlord [the Kantembe family].

“Bullets are in good books with the landlord. There is just a small misunderstanding between the landlord and a lady who runs a restaurant. We want to sort out things amicably. The lady is under us. It is like you keep your son and he has a misunderstanding with the landlord,” said Mkandawire.

A spokesperson of the landlord, Mphatso Kantembe, on Tuesday confirmed that they were still in tenancy agreement with Bullets.

“The place is not in good condition for a club. As landlords, we have to be responsible and take care of the place so that our tenant is happy. It is just that the lady who runs a restaurant does not understand. She wants to keep running the restaurant,” Kantembe said.

Bullets are among a few Super League clubs such as Civo United, Azam Tigers and Silver Strikers that have homes. Financial problems and lack of visionary management has a few top-tier clubs owning places such as grounds and clubhouses. Malinda Chinyama heads Bullets management committee.
