Big Bullets hold Blantyre United

Big Bullets paraded eight trialists and still managed to hold 1-1 full-strength Blantyre United in a strength-testing match played at the Kamuzu Stadium on a lazy Sunday afternoon.

Captain of the day, Grant Lungu put his side ahead from the penalty spot from a rebound after United veteran goalkeeper Simeon Kapuza had punched out his initial attempt in the 15th minute. United defender had handled the ball in the penalty area to earn Bullets the penalty.

A few minutes later, Lungu should have claimed a second, but his free header was, to say, the least pathetic as it flew over the far bar.

Bullets’ left back Ian Chinyama was mesmerising with his overlapping runs. Peter Mpulula was rock solid in central defence, Keston Kasonda had an average game in defence, towering Blessings Kawanga was nervous, but still showed some flashes of brilliance in defensive midfield role.

Still in Bullets’ midfield Lonnex Macheka looked dangerous when making surging forward runs, but his sense of positioning was poor while Samson Chonde also tried hard on the right wing.

Half-time ended with Bullets carrying the slender lead which United’s Victor Limbani eventually erased after break. United had Muhamad Sulumba and returning Lawson Chilewe in attack as the relative new faces.

Bullets acting general secretary Higger Mkandawire said the trials, now running to four months, will continue with the new players until they settle for final 25.

“Currently, we have 30 players, including the old ones,” he said.

Bullets were without head coach Eddington Ng’onamo who left for Denmark on Saturday for month-long coaching stints with lower division teams. Gerald Phiri is now the acting head coach.
