Malawi President Bingu wa Mutharika has assured the women and girls in Malawi of freedom of dress.

Speaking in a special address to the nation this Thursday afternoon, the President said he did not send anyone to harass women wearing trousers.

“Women have the right to dress as they wish because there is no law prescribing how women should dress,” he said in reaction Tuesday’s incidents in Malawi’s capital, Lilongwe, where women were stripped naked by people believed to be vendors.

The shameful incidents spilled to Mzuzu City on Wednesday.

He told the women to report to him if someone harasses them for wearing trousers.
