Bishop Martin Mtumbuka of Karonga Diocese of the Catholic Church has donated face masks to learners from St Joseph the Worker Primary School in Karonga.

Speaking on Tuesday during the handover, Mtumbuka said he wanted the learners to use the face masks during their Primary School Leaving Certificate of Education (PSLCE) examinations underway in the country.

Mtumbuka hands out face masks to learners

The bishop told the learners to continue observing Covid-19 preventive measures even after their examinations.

Said Mtumbuka: “When PAC [Public Affairs Committee] asked us to identify a school within the diocese to benefit from the donation, we settled for this school despite being located in town because many pupils come from poor families.

“So, besides protecting the pupils from the pandemic, the gesture is also a morale booster during exams.”

Speaking on behalf of  the learners, Lebohang Munde said they had no face masks.

The school’s head teacher Ellen Mwafulirwa said the face masks will protect the pupils from the pandemic during the examinations.

Karonga has registered 84 Covid-19 cases with four deaths.
