Bishop of Mangochi Diocese Montfort Stima on Wednesday survived in a car accident along the Liwonde-Mangochi Road, also known as Arthur Peter Mutharika Highway, in Mangochi.

In an interview on Wednedsay, the bishop’s secretary Father Israel Madziakaphwa said the Bishop was driving a Toyota Hilux from the direction of Liwonde to Mangochi Boma.

Curious residents at the accident scene

He said: “I can confirm that the bishop was indeed involved in a road accident at Maryam Teacher’s Training College at around 3pm. He said he dozed off while driving, leading to the accident in which the motor vehicle overturned.”

Madziakaphwa said people rushed to the scene and some well-wishers took him to the hospital.

“He has sustained minor injuries and of course the whole body is dirty with dust since he went into the garden,” he said.

At the time of the interview around 5pm on Wednesday, Madziakaphwa said the bishop was receiving treatment at Koche Community Rural Hospital at Koche Trading Centre widely known as  Maldeco.

“As of now, we can’t say the degree of injury until doctors assess him. But he is in stable condition,” he said.

Stima’s accident comes barely three days after journalist Mayamiko Majawa died in a car crash along the same road.

In October 2013, Bishop Stima was admitted to the intensive care unit at Mwaiwathu Private Hospital after surviving a serious accident at Zalewa on his way from Mzimba where he went to attend the Diamond Jubilee for St Theresa Parish, Katete.
