Bishop urges Tonse Govt to walk the talk

Bishop of Mzuzu Diocese John Ryan has urged President Lazarus Chakwera and his Vice-President Saulos Chilima to fulfil their promise of serving Malawi better.

Speaking yesterday when he presided over distribution of food items, money and other household items to vulnerable women in Mzuzu to cushion them from effects of coronavirus (Covid-19), Ryan said Chakwera and Chilima are God-fearing leaders who have been in politics long enough to know what is best for the country.

Ryan: They are there to serve

He said he holds the two in high esteem, and prays that they promote servant leadership as promised.

Said Ryan: “The President and Vice-President have emphasised the idea of servant leadership. That they are there to serve. Our prayer is that they will continue with that servant leadership in leading Malawi.”

He then asked the new government to implement strong measures to protect everyone from the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic.

The bishop said parents are concerned about lives of their children who can no longer attend school because it is risky.

On the donation, St Peter’s Cathedral parish priest John Moyo said the church will utilise its little resources to support vulnerable groups so that they are not heavily affected by Covid-19.

“There are some families that were doing small businesses and with this capital boost, they can manage to sustain their businesses. But there are others that don’t have businesses. They need support to ensure that the families survive,” he said.

Ernestina Kanyinji, a beneficiary who supports a family of nine, commended the church for the food and financial support, saying life has been unbearable with Covid-19.

“Our businesses are not doing well with coronavirus in place. I sell vegetables door-to-door but these days, some customers send me back saying there is coronavirus,” she said.

The Tonse Alliance government has made short and long-term promises to Malawians, including achieving food security, fighting unemployment, corruption, reducing presidential powers, promoting quality education and infrastructure development.
