The Black Missionaries Band, the popular reggae outfit in Malawi, on Monday took leave of President Joyce Banda at Sanjika Palace in Blantyre.

The band left for the Republic of Ireland on Tuesday and will return on 28th August after performing at the Miss Malawi Ireland show on August 17 and on August 23 in Dublin.

Banda through the Joyce Banda Foundation International procured eight air tickets for the band members and also provided their subsistence allowances.

She said she learned about a shortfall in the band’s trip to Ireland and was encouraged to come to their support.

“I am always inspired of keeping the dreams of your fathers. The Black Missionaries Band has inspired many youths in the country and abroad. I am particularly encouraged with the message you send out. You promote our culture,” said President Banda before she handed over the tickets to band manager Ray Harawa.

The President applauded Malawians in diaspora for showcasing Malawi culture.

She said it is important that such initiatives undertaken by Malawians in diaspora are institutionalised.

Harawa thanked the President and the Joyce Banda International Foundation for the air tickets and allowances.

“We are grateful and this lifts up our spirits to do our best as usual. We greatly appreciate the gesture the President has demonstrated,” said Harawa.

The band last week approached Mangochi South MP Yusuf Matumula who facilitated their meeting with President Banda.

Matumula thanked the President for granting the band audience saying the Black Missionaries Band are Malawi’s ambassadors and as such deserve support.
