Blantyre District Health Office (DHO) has announced plans to engage psychiatrists to help handle Covid-19 cases.

Blantyre district medical officer Zadziwe Gundah said this during a briefing at Blantyre DHO on Wednesday.

He said they have decided to engage the psychiatrists after discovering that the suspects are likely to face discrimination which may result in stress.

“We have four suspects being attended to by psychiatric personnel at Zomba Mental Hospital,” said Gundah.

He also said the DHO has tested 100 out of 1 500 health care workers and have trained about 20 health care workers to conduct testing.

On May 1, Blantyre district director of health and social services Gift Kawalazira condemned stigma on Covid-19 suspects following complaints from people who tested positive to the pandemic.

“People should treat Covid-19 suspects the same way they treat people suffering from any other disease. Any form of discrimination against them is an offence,” he said. Blantyre has registered 16 Covid-19 cases with one death.
