Blantyre Girls still waiting for Zahara’s guitars

The song that resonates well with the feelings of students and teachers of Blantyre Girls Primary School can be Tikudikirirabe Mpaka Lero by Phungu Joseph Mkasa after Zahara’s promise to donate guitars to the school seem far from being honoured.

On February 16 last year, the award-winning songstress visited the primary school in a drive to encourage girls to work hard and go further with their education.

During the visit, the Loliwe singer pledged to donate 30 guitars to the school that students could use to learn music.

Zahara also pledged a one-year subscription of The Nation newspaper for the school.

Deputy headmaster of the school, Ruth Nambuzi, told The Nation that the school has been receiving newspapers from NPL but the guitars have not been delivered to date.

“We haven’t heard anything from the musician. After she went back to South Africa that was the end of our communication,” said Nambuzi.

The guitar pledge was made in line with Zahara’s Hoping Guitar Project which commits itself to donating guitars to primary schools in all the 53 countries in Africa.

Steve Kamanga, managing director of Mango Advertising Agency which organised Zahara’s visit to Malawi, said they have been in contact with the Afro-soul singer.

Kamanga said the artist has been busy with touring to promote her latest album Phendula.

“She is busy right now but she has promised us that she has not forgotten the pledge she made,” said Kamanga.

He was quick to say that the diva is actually planning to visit the country again to deliver the guitars herself.

“She has refused to involve representatives and insisted that she will personally deliver the guitars,” said Kamanga.
