Determined to regenerate the city of Blantyre as the most beautiful and clean, Mayor Noel Chalamanda will at the end of this month launch the Keep Blantyre Clean and Green Campaign.

Under the initiative, the mayor intends to sensitise and mobilise residents of the city to respond to the need to clean up dirty places, making sure refuse is dumped in right places, planting trees and looking after flower gardens at their homes and institutions.

Speaking when he unveiled the plans on Friday, Chalamanda said the strides that the city of Blantyre wants to achieve will start with the impression it generates.

“This initiative will be launched by all of us. It will be a long campaign, but we have to rise in unison to condemn lack of hygiene,” said Chalamanda during a press briefing.

Through the initiative, Chalamanda and his team intends to, among other things, engage institutions to own the streets where they operate to ensure they are smart and attractive.

He also said the exercise will see those who still keep their surroundings dirty and an eye sore being named and shamed publicly.

The initiative has since been endorsed by First Lady Gertrude Mutharika’s Beautify Malawi (Beam) Trust, pledging their support.
