Speaking to the gathering which included wives of police officers, Blantyre Police Officer in Charge Ellobium Banda commended the women for the initiative.

“This will help alleviate some of the challenges the widows and orphans are facing. Let me also take this opportunity to advise women’s welfare committee to make sure that you use the money realised for the intended purpose,” said Banda.

Chairperson for the southern region women’s welfare committee, Moja Phiri, said the deaths have left many families struggling to make ends meet.

“We as police we are a family, we have seen families of our late colleagues suffering, children lacking school fees and with guidance from our seniors we decided to come up with this initiative to at least try to minimise the challenges,” she said.

The money realised is expected to benefit over fifty orphans and widows.
