Police in Blantyre have set up a number of strategies that include reinforcement of sweeping and police patrol exercises, to tighten security and reduce road accidents during the festive season.

Speaking on Monday during a Community Policing Executive Forum meeting, Station Officer for Blantyre Police Brenda Nkhoma said other strategies include mounting of ad-hoc road blocks and lobbying for improved street lights.

“We are committed to ensuring a safe and secure festive season and we encourage the general public to support our efforts by keeping their homes safe, reporting suspected criminals and observe traffic rules and regulations,” urged Nkhoma.

She also disclosed that in the month of November, Blantyre registered 104 road accidents, a 14 percent decrease as compared to 183 road accidents registered during the same period last year.

Station Executive Committee Chairperson for Blantyre Community Policing, Misheck Munthali, promised to ensure that all neighbourhood watch sections work in collaboration with the community policing.

He called on the corporate world and well wishers to support the police by providing amenities such as fuel so that they conduct their work effectively.

Munthali advised police officers to be disciplined during the festive season.
