Blantyre United executive committee met the technical panel on Monday to review their TNM Super League first-round showing and strategise for next week’s Carlsberg Cup semi-final against Kamuzu Barracks (KB) FC.

United administrator Lawson Nakoma said the meeting resolved to set one-off incentives to motivate players for the game against KB who are overwhelming favourites.

“On first round, the consensus was that it was not very successful. As a way forward, we resolved that we need to beef up by replacing Maxwell Chirwa [and sign] a defender. As for the semi-final, this is a must-win, hence the need for the incentives. But for the actual figures, we are yet to agree,” Nakoma said on Tuesday.

He insisted that while KB are favourites, United are determined to prove that they are not in the semi-final by fluke. The Elia Kananji-coached side are the only civilian team in the semi-finals which has paired Army outfits Red Lions and Moyale Barracks.

Kananji on Tuesday shared Nakoma’s optimism, adding that his squad will be boosted by the return from suspension of skipper Greyson Phiri and striker Sparrow Msowoya who has recovered from a collarbone injury.

“I feel Civo United, who we met in the quarter-final, were much stronger than KB. Few can agree with us, but after 90 minutes, you will do so. Not only do I think we will beat KB, but we will go all the way to lift the cup,” Kananji challenged.

In an earlier interview, KB general secretary Dickson Ntontholo vowed that no team can stop them in their quest to win their first top flight league silverware. KB beat United 2-1 in a league meeting.
