Blantyre Zero break record

Listen to this article

Blantyre Zero got into history books on Saturday by becoming the first women’s football team in the country to register 12 straight wins without conceding a goal.

And they did it in style at Escom Ground in Blantyre where they whipped their youth side ATU Ladies 9-0 before thrashing Zomba-based Sitima Sisters 20-0 the same day to maintain their position on the summit of the Peter Mutharika Southern Region Women Football League.

The defending champions have now broken DD Sunshine’s record. The Lilongwe-based side in 2012 went 10 games without letting in a goal in Central Region encounters of Mutharika League.

Blantyre Zero coach Elija Kananji attributed the achievement to team spirit among his charges and Thoko Mwase’s faultless goalkeeping.

“It has been a wonderful season for us,” said Kananji. “The girls play as a team and they are determined to finish the league without conceding a goal.”

So far, Zero have scored 85 goals and are leading the eight-team league on 34 points, four ahead of second-placed Ntopwa Super Queens.
