Blantyre Zero retain Donna’s Eggs title

Blantyre Zero beat Zomba City Queens 4-1 to retain the Donna’s Eggs Southern Region Women Football Trophy on Saturday at Chiwembe Technical Centre ground.

The Zomba Queens lost in the final to Blantyre Zero for a third year running,

First-half ended 1-1 as Zero opened the score-sheet in the 25th minute through Ruth Tambala’s tap-in. The Queens got an equaliser five minutes later through Tisadane Bokosi’s 20-metre drive. Nevertheless, Zero scored three quick goals in the last 30 minutes to confirm their victory.

Even when Sheila Kapasula-Dimba was shown a red card for running to the terraces to celebrate scoring Blantyre Zero’s second goal in the 65th minute, Zomba City Queens still looked nervous in the second half, especially, in defence.

Maggie Chombo-Sadiki and Pilirani ‘Pido’ Malora completed the rout with their respective well taken free-kick from close to the centre circle and a blazing shot from the right flank.

“I have to congratulate my players for giving their all during this encounter,” said Blantyre Zero coach Abel Mkandawire.

As some of his players shed tears on the pitch, Zomba City Queens coach Richard Chipungu showed a brave face and said they would work hard to fine-tune their weak areas.

Blantyre Zero received K300 000 plus a trophy while Zomba Queens got the K150 000 runners-up purse. Ntopwa Super Queens, who beat Dreams United 2-1 in the third-place match, took home K75 000.

Malora was crowned Player of the Tournament while Ntopwa Queens’ Laita Magombo was Top Goal Scorer. They received K10 000 each.

During the prize presentation ceremony, Donna’s Eggs marketing manager Sadiki Malinga said, pending the company’s management approval, sponsorship for the event will increase from the current K1 million. FAM technical director, Jack Chamangwana was the guest of honour.
