Covid-19 creates Football dilemma

Blantyre Zero thrashed their youth side ATU Ladies 7-0 at a waterlogged Mthawila Parish ground in Machinjiri, Blantyre on Sunday to put their Peter Mutharika Southern Region Women Football League title defence bid on course.

Pilirani Malora and Enelecio Mhango scored a hat-trick each before Salome Vinkhumbo hit the final nail that granted ATU Ladies their first defeat in four games this season.

ATU Ladies looked a better side for the better part of the match, but the slippery surface that resulted from early morning showers on the day seemed to betray them. Striker Alice Nahawa lost two scoring opportunities after she slipped in front of goal.

“We had to beat them by the highest margin possible not to embarrass them, but to help them grow into a stronger side,” said Zero’s senior player Maggie Chombo-Sadiki.

However, ATU Ladies coach Karen Chaura attributed their loss to the slippery surface saying her girls could not concentrate on the game.

Zero tops the eight-team log table with 12points from four straight wins while ATU Ladies are fourth with 7points from two wins, a draw and a loss. King’s Ladies beat Sitima Sisters 2-0 at Chirunga ground in Ndirande on Sunday to cement their stand on the sixth place as fifth-placed Dreams United drew 1-1 with Evirom Sisters at the same venue.
