The Blantyre-Zomba Road being constructed by Mota-Engil is over half way through at 62 percent completion, officials have said.

The 59.62-kilometre road, also called John Chilembwe High Way, is being constructed from Maselema Roundabout in Blantyre to Ku Chawe Inn junction in Zomba.

There was a tarmac road between the two cities which was deemed outdated and too narrow.

The re-constructed road comprises widening and sealing the carriageway to seven metres plus shoulders of 1.5 width on either side and reconstruction of drainage structures.

Construction of the road started on March 19 2012 and is expected to finish on March 18 2014.

Roads Authority public relations officer Portia Kajanga said on Friday when journalists toured the road that the construction could finish later than expected.

“There were a number of challenges that were being faced which took most of the contractor’s time. But we will strive to make sure that the road is finished,” said Kajanga.

The Blantyre-Zomba Road is being constructed with funding from the African Development Bank and the government of Malawi at the cost of K5.4 billion.
