Blasto in USA for charity concerts

Malawi Music Awards (Muma) nominee for the Best Dancehall Artist category, Blasto, is in the US where he is performing at concerts and holding talks in high schools to raise money for Operation Smile, an organisation that performs free surgeries in middle and low income countries.

The Malawian dancehall maestro left for the US two weeks ago where he is holding talks about Malawi at colleges. He also performed at a benefit concert for Operation Smile in Virginia Beach.
“I have been in the USA since two weeks ago. I was in New York for a week and flew to Virginia Beach on February 12 for the Rock the Smile Concert, which took place last Friday. I also did talks at Cape Henry Collegiate and Norfolk Academy, talking about Malawi in general,” said Blasto, whose real name is Otis Chilamba.
The artist says he has also been approached by other schools to assist them in raising money for Malawi.
“I was scheduled to visit another school on Friday [today], but it is snowing heavily and we have since rescheduled it,” he said.
Blasto is a second time nominee in the Muma, but has earned recognition in US, UK and Jamaica with his music available on Amazon, iTunes and several other electronic music outlets.
Operation Smile is an international children’s medical charity that performs safe, effective cleft lip and cleft palate surgery, and delivers postoperative and ongoing medical therapies to children in low and middle income countries.
The organisation has done over 300 free surgeries at Kamuzu Central Hospital and has been training nurses since 2012.
Blasto joined the organisation as a volunteer in 2012.
Two years ago, it was reported that his music was being played on radio stations in Jamaica and Spain, especially the number one hits Jah Nah Aleep, Party and also songs off the Fresh From Yard album such as My Business, Amazing and Warn Dem.
