Blue Eagles take Fama to task over prize money

Champions of the Fellowship Association of Malawi (Fama) Cup, Blue Eagles FC, have given the sponsors up to October 30 to pay them their K3 million (about $10 000) prize or face the wrath of the law.

Five months have elapsed since Eagles were crowned champions, but they are yet to get their prize money.

“We gave them enough time to source the money and pay us but it seems they took our patience for granted. Now we have given them until October 30 to pay us. This is not on,” said Eagles general secretary Ackis Muwanga on Thursday.

The competition’s organising secretary Japhet Majekete insisted his organisation will honour their debt but could not give specific dates.

“It is in not that we are doing this deliberately. We are waiting for donors who promised to finance us on this. I cannot give you the date but all I can promise is that we will give them their money. We are not happy to be in this situation,” said Majekete.

Big Bullets, too, say they are yet to get their dues.

“They have yet not given us but we have let the matter rest. It will be more expensive for us to pursue it. But our position is that we will never participate in any tournament organised by them. We have learnt our lessons. They made a lot of money from our fans but they seem not to appreciate that,” said Bullets chairperson Malinda Chinyama.

The Fama Cup was worth K12.5 million.
