Malawi Defence Force (MDF) boxer Wilson ‘Hard-hitter’ Masamba has been deployed to the war-torn Eastern Goma State in the Democratic Republic of Congo on a peace-keeping mission.

MDF athletics-in-charge Peter Genti confirmed that Masamba left the country last Thursday and will take his time off the ring for six months.

“This is one of his obligations as a soldier to fulfil,” said Genti.

He said Masamba is not the only prominent sportsperson on the mission in Goma, but he said he did not have names of the athletes at the time of the interview yesterday.

An inside source, who asked for anonymity, said Mafco FC coach Temwa Msuku, Red Lions FC trainer Collins Nkuna, MDF athletics coach Emmanuel Mlonya and netball official Titus Wankhama are also on their way to the peace-keeping mission.

“This is a new mission. It is not necessarily a peacekeeping mission, but rather a peace enforcement exercise. Masamba was the first prominent sportsperson to leave for the DR Congo on Thursday. Others will follow soon,” said the source.

He added that some players from Red Lions, Mafco, Kamuzu Barracks and Moyale Barracks, which are MDF teams, will also make the trip.n
