Mayawo: We have not yet established whether the death was due to food poisoning

Assistant Police Public Relations Officer for Blantyre, Andrew Mayawo, has identified the deceased as Luka Mofati.

According to Mayawo, Luka and his four friends took the sweet bear at a church function in the area last Sunday.

While Luka died a few hours after drinking the sweet beer, Mayawo said his four friends developed stomach upsets and were admitted to Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital, but have now been discharged.

Mayawo further said police have not made any arrests as investigations are ongoing.

“We have not yet established whether the death was due to poisoning so we are still waiting for postmortem results and for the sweet beer to be tested by the hospital,” he said.

Luka Mofati was a standard five pupil at Nancholi primary school.

Still at Nancholi, a 31 year old man hanged himself Monday night after taking too much alcohol.

Mayawo said the deceased, Christopher Scott, was a drunkard, and did not leave any note explaining why he committed suicide.

Scott hailed from Sumani village in the area of Traditional Authority (TA) Somba in the district.
