Bravehearts basketball teams set records

Done to a turn.  Bravehearts men and ladies teams have finished their league assignments with a 100 percent record after winning all their games.

The ladies side wound up their Central Zone Basketball League (Cezobal)  assignments last week with a 20-0 win over Dynamites who forfeited the game after trailing badly in the first two quarters.

As push came to shove, Dynamites were forced to throw in the white towel in the second quarter. The game was then awarded to the lady Bravehearts.

Bravehearts will participate in play-offs involving top four teams from the ladies league to identify Cezobal representatives during Basketball Association of Malawi (Basmal) national championship.

Captain Lisungu Banda attributed the team’s success to the good support it has been getting from their sponsors G.Y Imports and Exports and Dr Print.

“Since taking over sponshorship G.Y Imports and Exports have been looking after players welfare, buying equipment for the team and facilitating good training and this has been a source of motivation.

“We did not have even a single ball when they came onto the scene and we were rarely training as a team due to problems ranging from transportation to shortage of equipment,” she said.

Bravehearts men’s side completed its clean sheet after thrashing veterans’ team Hoops by 117 baskets to 42 at Civo court in Lilongwe on  Wednesday night.

By virtue of being champions in Cezobal League B, Bravehearts men will now earn promotion into Cezobal League A alongside giants Mimbulu, Corgars, Bayonets and Central Knights who are currently leading the log table in League A.

Bravehearts men’s captain Madalitso ‘Montana’ Kadiwa said the team was now looking forward to playing in the top league.

“We know it will be tough in the main league, but we are not afraid of any team. We have played against most of the teams in the top league and defeated them,” he said

Despite playing in the lower league, Bravehearts boast  of experience having played against top teams in Botswana, Tanzania, Zambia and recently Zimbabwe ,courtesy of their sponsors G.Y Imports and Exports and Dr print.

The team joined the league at the start of this season after operating as a developmental team and as per the league’s rules and regulations had to start from league B.

Bravehearts patron Griffin Kalua, who is also managing director of G.Y Imports and Exports, said he was proud of his teams’ feat.

“As a coach, I also feel great because my players are extremely talented and they made my job very easy. The structures we have put in place and the funding towards both teams, was an extra motivation,” he said. n
