Blantyre Sports Club (BSC) golf captain, Hudson Kantwanje, handed over the mantle to his successor, John-Gift Mwakhwawa, on Sunday.

As per tradition, Kantwanje hosted a farewell competition dubbed ‘Captain’s prize goes charity’, which was won by James Shonga and Roza Mbilizi.

The main sponsors of the event that attracted 50 golfers, were Nico Asset Managers, TNM and Carlsberg Chill and proceeds went towards purchase of 13 wheel chairs, 15 pairs of aluminium clutches and nine walker-frames valued at K1.7 million to be donated to Kachere Rehabilitation Centre tomorrow.

“I am lost for words, but I will cherish the time I served as captain,” said Kantwanje. He later presented honorary trophies to those that played various big roles during his successful tenure. He, too, got an honorary trophy from the BSC board.

BSC board chairperson Captain John Katsala paid tribute to Kantwanje, saying during his tenure, he set the bar very high, “and I don’t envy his successor. Thanks to all those who supported Hudson. On behalf of the board, I would like to say thank you to Hudson for the wonderful job you have done.”

In the men’s category, seven-handicapped Shonga won with 40 points and was offered bed and breakfast at any Sunbird hotel of his choice while Mbilizi, playing-off 10 handicap, did it to perfection in the women’s category with 34 points. She also had the longest drive on hole eight.

Sope Kayira was second in men’s category with 38 points after counting out Chris Bulawayo. Kayira was also offered a night at any Sunbird hotel whereas Bulawayo got an offer of a dinner for one at Protea Ryalls. In the women’s category, the runner-up was Lucy Ganiza (33 points) while Teri Amaro was third on 29 points.

Phillip Phambana won the senior golfers’ category with 26 points. Bulawayo also had the longest drive on hole six while Ketta Mwalwafu was nearest to the pin on hole 12. During prize presentation, golfer James Chuma won K50 000 in a raffle draw. He donated the money to Kachere Rehabilitation Centre.

Nico Assets Managers senior investment officer Esnat Lweya said they felt obliged to be one of the main sponsors because the tournament had a touch of charity.

Carlsberg Malawi marketing manager Gywynth Mchiela and TNM regional head for Blantyre David Nyirenda, separately committed continued sponsorship towards golf.

“Carlsberg is responsible for brewing your enjoyment and it remains committed towards development of golf and as such, I would like to pledge continued sponsorship,” said Mchiela.

On his part, Nyirenda said: “TNM is pleased with the association it has with BSC, we do more than six golf tournaments in a year and we’ll continue to work towards benefiting the underprivileged.”

Other sponsors of the tournament were Marsh Malawi Limited, Nico General Insurance, Kingfisher Associates, National Bank of Malawi, Afcor IT Solutions, Lab Enterprise, Cartrack, HABP Lubes, Sunbird Tourism, Real Insurance, Vanguard Life Insurance, IntoSports, ICL, F & M Motors, James Chimwaza and Lloyd Kondwani.
