The CCAP Blantyre Synod on Wednesday launched K350 000 (about $1 400) football and netball trophies at Sakata Community Centre ground in Sub-Traditional Authority Nkagula in Zomba.

The initiative is part of the synod’s projects to mitigate the impact of HIV and Aids in the area and is run with assistance from Villages in Partnership (VIP) of the United States of America.

Speaking after the launch of the trophies, VIP team leader Bob Robert Rhoad hailed the performance of the netball teams.

“This is my first time to watch netball and I was curious to see how it is played. You may wish to know that, in America, we do not play netball. With what I have seen here, I understand why the Malawi national netball team is Number One in Africa,” said Rhoad.

A representative of the Zomba District Football Committee (ZDFC) Christopher Phiri thanked the synod and VIP for the initiative.

“This tournament will go a long way to develop talent in this area. Apart from that, it will also assist the youth as they will be busy, thereby preventing themselves from indulging in immoral behaviour,” said Phiri.

During the launch in netball, Chilwa Sisters beat Ubale Sisters 10-5 whereas in social football, Blantyre Synod officials played out to a goalless draw with an Under-15 select side. Mulipa were 1-0 winners over Sakata Traders.

About 17 football and 10 netball teams have registered for the competition.
