BT Utd edge closer to Super League promotion

Blantyre United FC on Sunday beat Mangochi Police 7-2 to open a four-point gap at the top of Masters Security Southern Region Football Association (SRFA) Premier League and move closer to Super League promotion.

The match, which was nearly marred by a heavy downpour, was played at St. Paul’s Catholic ground before a sizeable crowd, United had to recover from a 0-1 loss to MDF Marine the previous day and played with precision.

Goals from Tawonga Malenga, Yamikani Tambala, John Chibaya and a hat-trick from Emmanuel Lino enabled the visitors to collect maximum points. The win has taken their tally to 84 points from 39 games. They now remain with a game against Nchalo United to wind up their assignments.

Speaking in a post-match interview, United technical director and owner Lawson Nakoma hailed his players for responding positively to the demands of what he described as a must-win game.

“We recovered well and scored early which was good. I told the players to put behind the 1-0 loss we suffered at the hands of MDF Marine and focus on the upcoming games. We cannot start celebrating promotion to the Super League because our contenders are also remaining with some games,” he said cautiously.

Their closest contenders Mitra Icons are second with 80 points butremain with two games against Nyambadwe Nyalapa and Zomba United. The Ndirande-based outfit on Saturday won 2-1 away to Hardknockers in Zomba.

In another match played on Saturday, Zomba United  lost 2-1 to Cobbe Barracks at Zomba Community Centre ground. Zed Chikango and Chimwemwe Chidati scored for the soldiers whereas Patrick Luhanga reduced the arrears for United. Prison United settled for a 1-1 draw with visiting Nyasa United. n
