BT Zero win South Women Football League

Blantyre Zero are Southern Region Women Football Association (SRWFA) League champions following a goalless draw against rivals Ntopwa Super Queens at Mpira Stadium in Chiwembe, Blantyre last weekend.

The draw has helped Zero to put the title out of reach for Ntopwa, who needed an emphatic victory    from the match to keep alive their hopes for their first regional glory.

Had Ntopwa triumphed, they could have narrowed the points-gap to three going into their last fixture.

Zero have reclaimed the honours with 40 points from 14 games while Ntopwa, who were seeking a revenge after a 5-1 first-round defeat, are now second with 34 points from 13 matches.

“We are happy with the title defence although a draw in our last game was not the result we expected,” said Blantyre Zero coach Karen Chaula. “Ntopwa upped their game and they gave us a good game. Nevertheless, what is important is that we have defended the title.”

Ntopwa team manager Isaac ‘Jomo’ Osman said although they have failed to win their first league title, they are happy to have settled for a draw against their bigger opponents.

“In the past, Blantyre Zero have been beating us in every match and plucking a draw against them last weekend is a good indication that our team is making good progress. We have been telling them that they could beat us several times but we will turn the tables one day and this is the start,” he said.

Zero’s free-scoring striker Temwa Chawinga has won the golden boot accolade with 42 goals. Mwayi Zimba and Vanessa Chikupira of Ntopwa are second and third best scorers with 19 and 18 goals, respectively.

Dreams United beat Blantyre Hotspurs 3-0 last to finish third on the log table with 22 points. Bangwe Super Queens are fourth with 19 points and remain with an encounter with Chikwawa Sisters to complete their fixtures. n
