Two children of the same family are battling for their life at Dowa District Hospital in central Malawi after a buffalo seriously injured them as they were cycling a bicycle with their friends.

The incident happened in Tsambe Village in Traditional Authority (T/A) Dzoole in Dowa on Sunday as the children, McLloyd and Maureen Kachigama were playing with their friends in a maize field.

Dowa Police spokesperson Kondwani Kandiado said the buffalo was wandering around the area and children mistook it for a cow.

“They stopped to let it pass thinking it was a cow. Then the buffalo hit McLloyd, 10, on his stomach, exposing the child’s intestines and injured his five year-old sister Maureen’s both legs,” said Kandiado.

He said the children were rushed to Mponela Hospital where they were referred to Dowa Hospital to receive adequate treatment.

Currently, police are patrolling the area to avoid similar incidents as they continue their search for the buffalo which is believed to have come from Kasungu National Park.

McLloyd and Maureen Kachigama, who are admitted to Dowa District Hospital, come from Tsambe Village in the same T/A.
