Bullets to play Mamelodi Sundowns in CAF preps

Ambitious Big Bullets have secured a friendly match against South Africa Premier Soccer League (PSL) side Mamelodi Sundowns early next month in preparation for their CAF Champions League assigments.

Bullets start the preliminary round first-leg match away against Fomboni Club de Moheil of Comoros Island on February 13, 2015.

The friendly match is expected to be played at Kamuzu Stadium in Blantyre.

“We have arranged a number of friendly games in preparation for the CAF assignments. Meanwhile, Mamelodi Sundowns are coming early January,” said Bullets general secretary Harold Fote yesterday.

Apart from Mamelodi, Fote said they have also arranged a series of friendly games with top teams in Mozambique and Tanzania.

“We want to make sure that by the time we will be playing CAF games we are fully prepared,” said Fote.

This is the second time Bullets will participate in the CAF Champions League. Their first appearance was in 2004 when they were being sponsored by former president Bakili Muluzi.

Most Bullets players from the squad of 2004 such as Fischer Kondowe,Peter Mponda, Robert Ng’ambi and James Chilapondwa who signed for clubs in Zimbabwe and South Africa, thereby creating depth for the Flames.

The CAF league winner will qualify for the 2015 Fifa Club World Cup, which is competed for by champion clubs from all six continental confederations.

Additionally, African champions earn the right to play in the 2016 CAF Super Cup which draws Champions League kings and CAF Confederation Cup winners.
