Jaco Burger on Saturday defied the odds to break the Nchalo golf record when he amassed a brilliant score of 45 points to emerge triumphant in the Total Malawi Invitational Golf Tournament at Nchalo Sports Club in Chikwawa.
Played on individual stableford format, the tournament attracted 72 golfers.
And it couldn’t have been more sweeter for Burger as the golf captain John Mphande announced a return ticket to South Africa as his prize in the presence of his source of inspiration— his wife Maretha.
Asked on whether he expected to win, the golfer’s face lit up and said: “Definitely. Nothing went wrong right from the first hole. I hit the ball well [and it was ending up where I was aiming.”
He thanked the sponsors and organisers for what he described as a wonderful tournament.
With a score of 36—nine points behind Burger—Albert Mkumbwa was the runner-up and he received a trophy and a K200 000 shopping voucher from IntoSports whereas Boniface Tivalenji was third with 35 points. He received a trophy and a Superior Store shopping voucher worth K45 000.
In the ladies’ category, Bhose Kamphulusa registered 34 points to emerge winner and she got a trophy and K250 000 Game Stores shopping voucher. Doreen Kavala, who had 33 points, was the runner-up and she got a trophy and a K180 000 shopping voucher.
Said Kamphulusa in her victory speech: “I am really humbled to be the winner today. It’s my first time to win here and I am excited. I thank my playing partners and the sponsors, you really spoiled us today.”
McChancy Mkamanga won the Total Malawi employees’ category. Mark Chitatanga was the best front nine whereas Lilongwe-based Chris Mpanga was the best back nine.
Cyrus Msowoya, MacDonald Maliro and Roza Mbilizi had two clubs and each got K29 000.
Total Malawi administration and finance manager Martin Msimuko thanked Illovo Sugar management and the Nchalo golf captain for allowing them to host the tournament and interact with their stakeholders.
“Special thanks to the golfers for honouring our invitation. We have interacted, we have listened [to your suggestions and proposals and you will see improved services. Remember to patronise our service stations where you are going to get more than fuel, you will get to know more about our lubricants,” he said.
