Burundian arrested for defilement, girl rescued
Kanengo Police Station has rescued a 15-year-old girl from marriage and arrested Leonard Juma, a Burundian national, for defiling and impregnating the teenager.
Kanengo Police Station spokesperson Laban Makalani said the girl—a Standard 6 pupil—fell into Juma’s trap early this year when she was coaxed by grocery items from his shop at Area 49 Dubai Market in Lilongwe.
Makalani said the girl’s parents discovered that she was pregnant last month and Juma accepted responsibility for the pregnancy.
“But this did not go down well with the victim’s mother, who later reported the matter to Kanengo Police Station, child protection branch. And the girl was rescued and sent to hospital where it was confirmed that she was six months pregnant,” said Makalani.
He said Juma will answer a defilement charge which is contrary to Section 138 of the Penal Code.
Juma’s local address is Dzaleka Refugee Camp in Traditional Authority Nsakambewa in Dowa. n
