A bus driver died yesterday while 18 passengers sustained injuries in a road accident involving a Sososo bus and a tipper at Dunduzu on the M 1 in Mzuzu City.

In an interview yesterday, Northern Region Police spokesperson Maurice Chapola identified the deceased as Joseph Maganga.

He said the bus registration BLK 5663 was heading to Karonga from the city and had 35 passengers on board.

Said Chapola: “A tipper registration number MZ 2404 loaded with gravel lost control and overturned.

“In the process of rolling, it hit the bus which was coming from the opposite direction.”

He said the driver of the bus was pronounced dead on arrival at Mzuzu Central Hospital while Queen Kasonda, 21, a passenger, sustained a fractured right leg and a cut in the head.

Chapola said the other passengers sustained minor injuries.

In a separate interview, Mzuzu Central Hospital spokesperson Arnold Kayira said 15 people were treated as outpatients.

“Two women and a man have been admitted after sustaining internal injuries,” he said.
