Bus falls, kills driver

A bus driver was yesterday killed after his bus overturned at Kristwick Bus Stage along the Masauko Chipembere Highway in Blantyre

According to witnesses, the driver, whom police identified as Yamikani Maluwana, was driving a Higger bus registration BT 7093 around 1am from the Clock Tower direction towards Ginnery Corner.

John Lameck said when the bus approached the stage, the driver lost control and jumped out through the window.

He said: “Unfortunately, he landed on the other lane [towards Clock Tower]  and the bus fell on him.

“We failed to pull him out because the bus was heavy.”

The bus being lifted by a forklift yesterday

Lameck said despite passers-by trying to help, it was impossible to lift the bus and pull him out.

“The driver stayed for almost nine hours waiting to be pulled out under the bus,” he said.

When The Nation visited at the scene around 10am, a forklift truck from was seen lifting the bus which had its front windscreen extensively damaged.

In a separate interview, Blantyre Police Station spokesperson Augustus Nkhwazi said the victim was pronounced dead upon arrival at Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital.

He said: “A post-mortem is yet to be conducted to establish the cause of death.

“Meanwhile, investigations have been instituted by Blantyre Traffic Police to establish the cause of the accident.”

Nkhwazi said the bus belonged to Trans Luxuria Executive Coaches, adding that they are also looking for three other passengers who were in the bus.
