The co-founder of the Global Health Corps (GHC), Barbara Bush, is expected in the country on Thursday to participate in mid-year retreats of the GHC fellows.

Barbara, daughter of ex-president of the United States George Bush will also highlight the importance of youth leadership in achieving change in global health.

A statement from the US Embassy public affairs section states that a reception would be held in Bush’s honour to be attended by Minister of Health Catherine Gotani Hara, government officials and GHC alumni, among others.

Barbara co-founded GHC with the aim of encouraging youth participation in finding solutions to health issues such as HIV, maternal and child health.

GHC fellows are selected from recent college graduates and young professionals from diverse cultural and professional backgrounds who are placed in health-oriented non-governmental organisations and government offices in the US, East Africa and southern Africa for one year.

“The retreats form a core part of the extensive training and development package that Global Health Corps offers fellows, to equip them to act as change makers in Global Health,” the statement reads.

Since its formation four years ago, GHC has deployed 322 fellows to work in seven countries and there are currently 18 fellows in Malawi.

Bush is a 2004 Yale University graduate who has worked with Unicef, World Food Programme, among others, and one of the World Economic Forum’s Young Global Shapers.
