South Africa-based Prophet Shepherd Bushiri has donated K10 million to Lilongwe-based children care centres Save Our Souls and Tili Nanu Orphanage as part of his charity mission.

During the donations on Friday, each of the two institutions received K5 million.

In an interview, Bushiri, who is founder of Enlightened Christian Gathering (ECG) Church and Prophet Shepherd Bushiri Investments, said he has been donating to other countries such as Nigeria and, therefore, decided to bring his charity work home.

“I am moving around the whole world helping people. A week ago I was in Nicaragua in [Central] America where I was helping many orphans and I was also in Nigeria. Charity begins at home. That is why I always remember my country. That is why I am here in Malawi,” he said.

Bushiri dismissed suggestions that he donates to gain mileage because he harbours political ambitions.

“It is wrong to link charity with politics. There are many politicians in the country that are not doing charity…this is God’s work and there is nothing political,” he said.

Tili Nanu Orphanage director Chawanangwa Mkandawire said they will use the donation to refurbish bedrooms, buy clothes and shoes for the 32 orphans the centre supports. n
