Recently, businesses have been targets of robberies, resulting in a number of businesspersons losing their lives and property.

However, some people have been blaming government on security lapses, saying it is not doing enough to protect people and property.

But speaking during an interface meeting with Mzuzu business community, security agents and Mzuzu City Council officials on Wednesday, Kaunda said it is high time business owners started to value security to protect their investments.

He said providing security is not the sole responsibility of government, adding that traders have to take part in ensuring a secure and peaceful nation.

Kaunda said there are a number of businesspeople that have the capacity to support the security sector, but they have no interest in doing so.

“You will find that a successful businessperson with big investments employs an old person as a guard. He is employing the old person so that he can pay him less. This shows lack of seriousness on the part of businessperson,” he said.

Mzuzu City mayor William Mkandawire said everyone has to be involved in combating crime, adding that most Malawians have been affected by a number of security challenges.
