Businessperson gets TDFC hot seat

Bussineperson Lameck Tchavi Mbewe amassed 29 votes against Ben Chiotcha’s two to clinch the Thyolo District Football Committee (TDFC) chairmanship during the committee’s polls over the weekend.

“It is an honour to be voted with such an overwhelming vote. That just shows how people trust my capabilities. I will not let them down,” he said.

His said his priority will be to rescue the league’s K1 million ($6 000) sponsorship from JJ Construction after the sponsors expressed dissatisfaction with how the league was run last season.

“This is the only tournament we have here. We need to safeguard it. It will be a disgrace to lose it because of maladministration, but we also have to work hard and get other sponsors,” he said.

Owen Kocherani went in unopposed as vice-chairperson whereas Charter Mankhwala got 25 votes against Martin Muwawa’s six for the position of general secretary. Griffin Lozani beat Andrew Chisale 29-2 on the position of vice-general secretary.

Manyani Munthali became the only lady to join the committee when she was voted in as treasurer after beating Levison Akimu by 29 votes to two. Committee members are Chabwera Tebulo, Martin Fulaye, Vincent Mtoto, Austin Kamwambe and a Midaya.

Southern Region Football Committee (SRFC) vice-chairperson Falawo Phiri urged the new committee to work hand-in-hand with teams to ensure smooth running of competitions.
