BWB acquires dredger for silt, debris

Blantyre Water Board (BWB) has acquired a dredging machine to deal with silt and debris, which cause problems during rainy season.

The dredger, bought with help from the Ministry of Agriculture, Irrigation and Water Development, will be operating at the board’s intake pond at Walker’s Ferry in Nkula. The dredger has already started removing silt and debris, according to BWB.

BWB production manager Dauson Noniwa, in a statement released yesterday, said the problem of silt blocking the intake pond will be a thing of the past as the machine will deal with silt before it starts accumulating at the intake.

He said: “The machine will ensure that there is no more silt blocking the intake pumps. This also means there will be no problems in pumping raw water from the intake as the dredger will remove silt and any debris clogging the intake chambers.”

BWB has two sources of water with an intake along the Shire River and another at Mudi Dam in Blantyre. BWB serves Blantyre City and surrounding areas such as parts of Chiradzulu and Bvumbwe in Thyolo.
