BWB awards communities in Mulanje

Blantyre Water Board (BWB) on Tuesday awarded four community tree planting clubs and six school clubs for their outstanding performance in the 2017/18 tree planting season covering over 5 000 hectares on Mulanje Mountain.

Speaking during the prize presentation ceremony, (BWB) board chairperson James Naphambo hailed the communities for their efforts which necessitated the smooth running of the Likhubula Water Supply Project.

He said as part of its corporate social responsibility, the board will support Pasani Rural Water Project in providing piped water to the communities.

Said Naphambo: “We are involving the community because we want them to be responsible and take care of the trees as well as the water pipes. With this competition, we have been able to plant enough seedlings and we are impressed.”

Mulanje Pasani legislator Angie Kaliati (Democratic Progressive Party Party-DPP) appreciated efforts by BWB, saying it will help restore Mulanje Mountain which he said was losing its trees due to wanton cutting down of the natural resource.

The winning club got K300 000 while the number one school received 50 desks and 1 000 exercise books.

BWB rolled out the K18 billion Likhubula Water Supply Project to tap water from Mulanje Mountain to Blantyre City and surrounding districts in December last year to ease water challenges in the commercial city.
